After a very hot week of prepping Stormy for storage in San Carlos at the
Marina Seca, we are now on our way back to San Francisco.

The process was more difficult than we expected and had its share of
hiccups, but we also met some great people who gave us good advice, drove
us around town, and showed us several fun spots in the area.

Even though we left SF in January, it feels like only yesterday. I can’t
believe that we’re already on our way back.

This is just a quick note to let everyone know that we made it to La Paz. We had a hell of a bash up the Cerralvo Channel yesterday, but we found a beautiful anchorage called Puerto Ballandro with blue water and white sand beaches just before sunset. We slept in and then did the final 3 hours to La Paz this morning.

The sun awning is up, and the beers are in the icebox. We’re going to blow up the zodiac and go explore town this afternoon. Once things cool off tonight, Heather will be posting some more photos. So stay tuned.

Just a quick email-to-blog note to let everyone know we made it safely to Bahia de Tortugas, or Turtle Bay. It’s about a third of the way down the outside of the Baja peninsula. We left Ensenada Tuesday afternoon and dropped our anchor around 8am this morning. It was a 64 hour passage over 2 days and 3 nights. We did night watch shifts of 3 hours on, 3 hours off. We stayed about 10-20nm offshore most of the way and had really great weather. It got gusty and rolly a time or two, but we had no bad weather at all. Yesterday, for example, I set the sails to a broad reach in the morning, adjusted the autopilot, and we didn’t touch a thing for the rest of the day. We just enjoyed being out on the ocean, read our books, and did projects, and we watched Stormy fly along at over 5 knots the entire day—-without touching a thing! There is only one other sailboat anchored here at the moment, so after a nap, we plan on heading ashore to check out the village. It looks like we’ll have it mostly to ourselves. zzzzz

UPDATE 1/30/14 3:51pm: we waited an extra day for better wind but be careful what you wish for 🙂 it should be a rockin night. We are leaving Channel Islands Harbor now, 3:51pm, and expect to be at Avalon by sunrise.

The weather looks good, and so we’ve decided to leave tonight for Catalina island.

We’ll be staying on a free dock at a museum in channel islands harbor until just before dark and then taking off. We topped off the diesel tank in case the wind gets light or decides to blow on our nose.

Smuggler’s Cove was beautiful but uncomfortable due to the swell. We decided to leave early (0800) and head back across the channel to Channel Islands Harbor near Oxnard.

The weather reports are predicting pretty high winds gusting to 35 in some areas around here until Sunday. We’ll either wait it out in Oxnard or make a run for Catalina Island if it doesn’t turn out as bad as they are predicting.

We are snuggled up cozy in Smuggler’s Cove. There’s a bit of swell making for a rolly evening, but the winds are light, stars are out, and we are 20 peaceful miles away from the mainland 🙂

Sleep well everyone. I’m on anchor watch.
